In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Lee County Clerk Kevin Karnes is hosting a free online class on how to file a domestic violence injunction for protection. The webinar is being held in partnership with Abuse Counseling and Treatment (ACT) and the Lee County Legal Aid Society.
The How-To class will take place from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 via the online platform Zoom.
An injunction for protection, also known as a restraining order, is a court order requiring an individual to stay away from another and not contact them. It is commonly used in domestic violence cases.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims through education and awareness. According to the National Institutes of Health, family and domestic violence is a common problem in the United States, affecting an estimated 10 million people every year; as many as one in four women and one in nine men are victims of domestic violence.
In this online class, participants will learn the process associated with filing an injunction for protection case with the courts. This includes:
- The Clerk’s role in the injunction process
- The various types of injunction cases
- Required forms & information
- How to electronically file an injunction
- Available contacts & resources
Following the presentation, a representative from the Lee County Legal Aid Society will be available for a Q&A session.
The webinar is being hosted in partnership with ACT, a private, not-for-profit agency committed to serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking; and the Lee County Legal Aid Society, which provides free legal aid for low-income residents of Lee County.
The class is free, but participants should register at www.leeclerk.org/seminar to receive the meeting link.
This class is part of the “How To” series provided by the Lee Clerk’s office to educate the community about all of the resources available to them. Recorded tutorials of past “How To” classes are available at www.leeclerk.org/howto.
